Why You Get Blackheads — And How to Stop Them

Blackheads are one of the most common — and often frustrating — skin concerns. These small, dark bumps form when pores become clogged with a mixture of excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells

, and bacteria. Unlike pimples, blackheads remain open at the surface, where the contents oxidize and turn dark.

Understanding why blackheads form is the first step toward stopping them. While they can appear on various parts of the body, they’re most often seen on the nose, chin, forehead, back, and chest.

What Causes Blackheads?

  1. Excess Oil Production
People with oily skin are more prone to blackheads. The more oil your skin produces, the more likely it is to mix with dead skin and clog your pores.

  2. Dead Skin Cells
When these aren’t properly removed, they build up and contribute to blocked pores.

  3. Hormonal Changes
Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and even stress can cause hormone fluctuations that increase oil production.

  4. Improper Skincare
Not cleansing your face regularly — or using the wrong products — can lead to clogged pores.

  5. Cosmetics and Skincare Products
Heavy or comedogenic products (those that clog pores) can worsen blackheads.

How to Stop Blackheads

  1. Use a Gentle Cleanser
Clean your face twice daily using a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove oil, dirt, and bacteria.

  2. Exfoliate Regularly
Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid and glycolic acid work best. They help clear dead skin and prevent buildup in pores.

  3. Apply Retinoids
Over-the-counter retinol or prescription retinoids promote cell turnover and prevent pores from getting blocked.

  4. Clay Masks and Charcoal Treatments
These absorb oil and help draw out impurities from deep within the pores. Use once a week.

  5. Avoid Touching Your Face
Your hands carry bacteria and oils that can transfer to your skin and worsen blackheads.

  6. Keep Products Light
Choose “non-comedogenic” labels on skincare and makeup to avoid clogging your pores.

  7. Stay Consistent
Results won’t appear overnight. Stick with your routine for several weeks to see improvement.

Blackheads may be common, but they’re not permanent. With the right skincare habits and consistent care, you can reduce and prevent blackheads — and enjoy a smoother, clearer complexion
